  • 4 c great northern beans cooked
  • 14 oz smoked sausage links sliced
  • 1/2 c yellow onion diced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 c dark brown sugar packed
  • 1 1/2 c water
  • 4 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/3 c molasses
  • 1/4 c maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • kosher salt to taste


  • Preheat oven to 400.
  • In a large cast iron skillet or dutch oven over medium heat, layer the sausage slices and fry them on both sides. Add the onion and butter to the sausage. Give a good stir and sauté until the onions is softened.
  • Add the beans, cinnamon, mustard powder, cayenne, molasses, maple syrup, tomato sauce or paste, sugar, and water. Stir it carefully so that you don’t mash the beans. Transfer the beans to an oven safe baking dish and bake uncovered for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
