This recipe makes the most well seasoned Crunchy Onion Rings with a crazy simple copycat Outback Bloom Sauce on the side.
The best Onion Rings are made with thick slices of onion, dipped in batter, rolled in seasoned bread crumbs, and fried to the perfect crisp. This recipe uses this technique with quality ingredients for the best possible outcome. I’m also sharing my simplified version of Outback’s Bloom Sauce.
What you need to make Onion Rings and Bloom Sauce
Vidalia onions
Egg
Seltzer water
Bread crumbs
Pankos crumbs
Flour
Cornstarch
Spices
Mayo
Cocktail sauce
Ketchup
Hot sauce, optional
Worcestershire sauce
Creole spice
Cooking oil
Skillet
Sheet pan with wire rack
Vidalia is a sweeter onion and make the best onion rings in my opinion. You can use whatever type of onion that you would prefer but I would stay clear of red/purple and white onion if this is your first time having them. I’m using plain bread crumbs and panko crumbs for extra crunch.
Copycat Bloom Sauce Recipe
Blooming onion or bloom sauce is a zippy dipping sauce made with horseradish. I took a slight shortcut by using prepared cocktail sauce in the absence of horseradish and it worked! Stir together the mayo, cocktail sauce, ketchup, worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and creole spice. Adjust the taste to your liking by adding more spice, etc.
How to make Crunchy Onion Rings
Cut off the top and root of the onion then slice it evenly in half. This should make about 8-12 rings per onion 3/4”-1” onion rings. Toss the rings in the cornstarch.
Make the batter by mixing flour, egg, and seltzer in a bowl. In a separate dish, whisk the panko, bread crumbs, salt, garlic powder, paprika, parsley, and sugar.
One onion ring at a time, dip them into the batter, shaking off the excess followed by a coating of the bread crumbs.
Heat approximately 2 cups of cooking oil in a skillet to 325-335 degrees over low heat. Fry in batches until golden brown and drain on wire racks. Serve with Bloom Sauce or barbecue sauce.
The best ways to enjoy onion rings
Serve these crunchy onion rings with bloom sauce on the side of Pub-Style Fried Cod Sandwiches and a refreshing glass of Lemonade Iced Tea.
