Baking can be intimidating for many but it really doesn’t have to be. I’ve said it many times before that if I can bake, anyone can bake. It takes a good recipe, time, patience, and proper equipment. Bread is one of the more forgiving baked goods so if this is your first time making bread dough, do not stress.

Ingredients and equipment needed to make homemade white bread

white bread flour ingredients

No bread maker required for this recipe. You will need at least a hand mixer with dough hook attachments and a very large bowl if you don’t have a sturdy stand mixer. As well as two loaf pans. For the ingredients you will need:

Bread flour– See below.

Fresh yeast– The rise of your bread will depend on the freshness of your yeast. Be sure to check the date on your packets. I use Fleischmann’s quick yeast in a jar. It stores well in the fridge.

Butter– Salted sweet cream butter is my preference but you can make this a total pantry recipe by replacing the butter with canola oil.

Sugar
Salt

Is bread flour the best type of flour for bread?

yeasty flour in a bowl

Most would argue that all-purpose flour is beast for sandwich bread but I don’t agree. I think bread flour gives the best texture for sandwich bread. The crust is the tiniest bit chewy and the overall structure of the bread is more resilient making it more sturdy than an all-purpose flour loaf. If you don’t usually purchase bread flour, please use all-purpose.

Using dough hooks, add the flour one cup at a time with the mixer speed at low-medium until the dough comes together. Next, turn the speed to medium-high to knead the dough for 7-8 minutes. Turn the dough into an oiled surface, not floured. Shape it into a ball then place it into a buttered bowl to rise.

Once risen, punch the dough down and divide it in half. Roll each half into rectangles then roll into logs. Pinch the seams and place rolls into buttered loaf pans.

Let them rise again until doubled in size. Brush the risen loaves with melted butter for a shiny top. Bake the loaves in a 350 degree preheated oven for 20-30 minutes.
