Make a delicious pot of Stovetop Homemade Chili in under an hour. Made with beef, beans, and a chili laced tomato base.
A good pot of chili can get the family to the table in a flash. It’s the perfect comfort food to share with and draw a crowd. This tasty Homemade Chili is made with the best.
Stovetop homemade chili ingredients
Ground beef, 80/20– I find that 80% lean with 20% fat is a good choice for chili and tacos. It’s not too greasy but gives enough fat to add flavor. You can always exchange for leaner beef if you need to.
Tomatoes with green chilies
Tomato sauce
Beef base or 3 beef bouillon cubes
Homemade chili seasoning
Jalapeño
White onion
Green pepper
Garlic cloves
Kidney beans
Black beans
Water
Masa harina
Large heavy-bottomed pot
Chili is really a simplistic dish. The seasoning is what brings the beef and beans to life. I make the BEST Homemade Chili Seasoning which is what I use in this recipe. But if you’re short on time or ingredients, you can substitute the homemade blend for a couple of packets of store-bought stuff.
How to make homemade chili
In a large pot over medium flame, heat canola oil then add the ground beef. Partially brown the beef then add the beef base. Continue browning the beef until cooked through.
Next, add the garlic, onion, green pepper, and jalapeño if using. Cook for 4-5 minutes to soften slightly.
Layer the kidney beans, black beans, and chili seasoning and gently stir.
Follow with the tomato sauce and diced tomato with green chilies. Be sure to include the liquid from the can and mix well.
Finally, stir in the water. Cover the pot and cook for 25 minutes; stirring frequently. Lower the heat to simmer after 10 minutes.
Once 25 minutes have passed, sprinkle the masa harina over the chili and mix well. Simmer another 3-5 minutes before turning off the flame. Serve as desired.
Why and how to thicken chili
Chili is more like a stew than a soup. Without adding a thickener it will be watery and soup-like. To thicken the stew, stir a few tablespoons of masa harina aka cornflour right into the pot at the very end.
What to serve with chili
I like to serve my chili with offerings like corn chips, diced onion, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, and sour cream.
