Watermelon is a summertime must-have. Every pool party, graduation cookout, or family get-together has it written in the bylaws as mandatory. This year I’m joining a group of talented African American cooks and chefs for a virtual Juneteenth cookout! Be sure to check out the amazing recipes they’re serving at the end of the pots. I’m serving up this Watermelon Limeade as an essential red drink for the celebration!

History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is an African American celebration of the emancipation of the last slaves to be freed from the Confederacy. Juneteenth, a combining of June and nineteenth, has been celebrated since June 19, 1865. The celebration and customs are as rich in history as the people who celebrate it. You can find more about Juneteenth from this article in The Daily Texan.

what is Juneteenth Red Drink?

One of the many customs of Juneteenth is the emphasis on the color red. Red symbolizes all of the blood lost during our fight for freedom. The color red is displayed throughout the celebration from the food and decorations to the clothes some choose to wear. Strawberry soda water, for example, is one of the traditional drinks served as that symbol.

Watermelon is another essential element of the Juneteenth celebration. It’s believed to be one of the oldest traditions of the holiday. For this recipe, I simply added a seedless watermelon, some lime juice, and sugar to a blender.

I don’t bother to strain it; just pour it over ice and serve. Be sure to see my tutorial on How to Cut a Watermelon.
